Cincinnati Pain Management
The first step in managing pain is to find out what is causing the pain. Whether the pain stems from an accident or trauma, Professional Radiology Inc. can determine the source of the pain. There are several factors that can cause back pain such as an accident or fall, or inflammatory disease.
Your physician will order a diagnostic imaging exam such as an X-ray, CT scan or an MRI to determine the extent of the injury or disease. Our physicians will interpret those imaging diagnostic scans at the Christ Hospital, Jewish Hospital, Fort Hamilton Hospital, and West Chester Medical Center.
The Interventional team is able to treat back pain caused by vertebral compression fractures (VCFs), accident or trauma, or osteoarthritis with minimally invasive procedures.
Interventional Radiology
Vertebroplasty and Kyphoplasty are two treatments that treat vertebral compression fractures. Both are designed to stabilize the vertebrae and relieve pain caused by the injury by injecting a special type of surgical cement into the fractured vertebrae. With kyphoplasty the physician will use a special instrument or balloon to create a cavity and restore height to the vertebrae and will then inject the cement into the space created. With vertebroplasty the cement is injected without first creating the space. Both procedures require image-guidance by the use of special kind of real-time X-ray, and are done under conscience sedation.
Epidural Steroid Injections or ESIs are procedures that treat inflammation in the joints or epidural space in the spine. Using image guidance our physicians guide a special needle into the injured space and inject a corticosteroid into the epidermis. Included in the injection is a numbing agent that provides immediate pain relief. The steroid will take several days to begin working and the patient may feel the return of the pain for several days. Sometimes it may take up to 3 injections for optimal effect. Patients can receive no more than 3 injections in a 6 month period.
