Leg Pain
Many people develop leg and hip pain, and new pain management options have been developed in recent years to help treat the root cause of this pain. Leg pain can develop at any point in life, making everyday functions, like walking, more difficult to perform. Whether your leg pain is being caused by damaged hip bones or irritation to the sciatic nerve, newer medical procedures can help take the pain away and restore your life to normal.
While many of these procedures have been newly developed, they have been proven to be very effective in both clinical trials and practical applications. These procedures have been developed from several other highly similar procedures, applying the same type of technology used to these new medical issues.
Sacroplasty
When breaks in the hip and pelvis bones occur, extreme pain in the lower body is very common. While these bones are very strong, breaks are very common in the elderly, especially those with osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a disease that commonly effect women, causing the person's bone density to decrease over a lengthy period of time. Once the bone density is decreased, breaks occur much more frequently and they require much less pressure.
Sacroplasty is a medical procedure that, much like vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty, uses bone cement to repair the damage pelvic bone following a break. It has become a very common treatment for those who have a sacral insufficiency, or people who simply experience a sacral break.
After the break locations has been determined, the patients is prepped for the procedure through sterilization and localized anesthesia. A total sedation may be used for those who have severe anxiety or may have issues going through the procedure without it. Once sedated, needles are inserted into the skin, typically in the buttocks, and guided to the site of the fracture using a fluoroscope. Once in place, bone cement is injected into the fracture, securing it. The cement tends to harden within 10-20 minutes, making the bone more solid and reinforcing the recent area of weakness. The needles are then removed, and the procedure is complete.
Patients are typically observed for up to 2 days to ensure the procedure was successful. Most patients report a complete alleviation of pain within the first week. This procedure is very new, and has proven very successful in both clinical trials and practical applications.
Epidural Steroid Injections
When leg pain is not caused by damage to a bone structure, it could very well be caused by irritation to the largest nerve in the body. The sciatic nerve, which is one of the largest nerves in the body, exists the spine at the lower back and travels down the back of the leg. This nerve essentially runs from your brain down to the tips of your toes. When soft tissue becomes inflamed or if something else irritates the root of the nerve, pain impulses will shoot down the entire leg, typically starting at the buttocks and slowly moving down the leg. Along with this nerve irritations, numbness, weakness, and tingling may also develop as well.
This type of pain can lead to difficulties walking, moving, and performing everyday activities. The technical word for this type of leg pain is radiculopathy, or leg pain that starts in the back. In many people, this will heal on its own over a short period of time. When the condition does not heal naturally, medical intervention must be taken in order to prevent it from getting much worse.
Since the majority of sciatica starts in the lower back, using an epidural steroid injection can help to give the body a needed boost in the healing process. A long needle is inserted in the dural sac in the lower back. Once safely inside this membrane, a dose of steroids is injected. Once in the dural area, it works as a numbing agent, reducing the paint felt from the area. Leg pain caused by the irritation to the root of the sciatic nerve will be greatly reduced. It also works as an anti-inflammatory, reducing the inflammation in soft tissue that could be putting pressure on the root of the nerve. This helps the body to heal faster reducing the amount of pain you are in.
Multiple injections are normally need to help eliminate the pain for good. If doctors have determined that your pain is caused by something othe than nerve irritation, other treatment options will be considered.
